MATERIAL & USE

Understanding PMF / PPF.

Palm Mesocarp Fibre is the fibrous material recovered after oil pressing and separation from the nuts at palm oil mills. Also known as Palm Press Fibre, it is used as fuel in compatible industrial boilers.

Available condition at source.

Moisture and fibre condition vary with processing, handling and storage. Current source availability and material condition are confirmed for each enquiry. Suitability depends on the receiving plant’s fuel and handling requirements.

About these reference values

The numerical examples above come from MPOB’s 2008 publication on Malaysian mill biomass. They are general product references and do not constitute AJP supply specifications. Additional studies below provide context on sample preparation, fibre recovery and fuel use.

  1. MPOB — Oil Palm Bulletin 56 (2008), Tables 1 and 2Chow Mee Chin, Mohd Basri Wahid and Chan Kook Weng: Availability and Potential of Biomass Resources from the Malaysian Palm Oil Industry for Generating Renewable Energy. Table 1 reports moisture at source; Table 2 reports dry-weight fuel characteristics. Energy figures above are rounded and converted from kJ/kg.

Supporting research

  • Malaysia — Idris et al. (2022), Frontiers in Chemical EngineeringMicrowave-Assisted Pyrolysis of Oil Palm Biomass: Multi-Optimisation of Solid Char Yield and Its Calorific Value Using Response Surface Methodology. Section 2.1 and Table 1 characterise PMF before pyrolysis, using samples that were air-dried and pulverised. These laboratory results describe prepared samples, rather than fibre as delivered from a mill.
  • Netherlands — Wageningen University & Research (2025), Report 2606Comparative Study on the Sustainability of Vegetable Oils. Section 3.1.2 describes palm oil processing in Indonesia, including mesocarp fibre recovery and its use as boiler fuel for mill steam generation. Cited for processing and fuel-use context, not for the calorific value, moisture or ash figures above. Full report hosted by the Dutch government.

Compare test results using the same moisture basis, material preparation and energy definition. GCV / HHV means gross or higher heating value; NCV / LHV means net or lower heating value. MPOB’s 2008 table labels its values as calorific value on a dry-weight basis. The supporting studies are not used to calculate the numerical examples above.

Material form, bulk density and size depend on preparation and handling. Confirm current source condition and any available test results when discussing supply.

SOURCING & DELIVERY

PALM MILLING CONTEXT

Where PKS, PMF and EFB come from.

These three materials are recovered at different stages of palm oil milling. EFB comes from threshing, PMF from fibre and nut separation after pressing, and PKS from nut cracking and shell separation.
